ok, *this* was the best gig ever...

yeah yeah, i guess i say that about whatever gig i just saw, but man,
could i be more happy? i'm feeling rather verbose. forgive me.

today started out on a truly wicked note. i met roderick down at r.o.w.
and we watched punchbuggy's instore. it was the first time they'd done an
instore and they felt like (adam's words) "dorks". mmmmmm, ya gotta love
that sense of humor.

i felt *sooooo* old at this gig, everyone there was wearing
really baggy shorts and had a skateboard and looked about grade 8 to me.
*sigh*. they played a rather short set, thanks to getting angry looks
from r.o.w. employees and next door neighbours. grrrr. mostly songs from
_all nite christian rollerskate_, but a few new ones, too. this ottawa
power pop four piece always make me happy. ok, so they're not the most
original sounding band, but hey, they do it for me. it was nice of them
to drive all the way from sydney (five hours away, i guess) this morning
just to do this all ages instore. rob and ian from thrush hermit were
there, too. oh, and jon "i'm more punk than you" :P dacey, too. (you
know, of that awesome band state champs).

afterwards, daydream playboys jim and james met up with me and we spent
several hours slaving over daydream related projects ("what kind of pizza
should we get, jim?")

then, at last...i got a hold of grieg from treble charger at his hotel
and managed to find a way to get me and my date into the six dollar gig
tonight for free. yay!! i tell ya, a band forgets to put your zine on
their cd rom and you can milk it forever... ;)

anyway, we four headed to birdland around ten pm. played pool (jim and i
played our last few balls for about 25 minutes, thats how bad we are).

first band up was Sian (sianspheric??) from HaMilton, ON. they're on
sonic unyon (my heroes!!!) records and have a cd out very soon. if you
like swervedriver, my bloody valentine, medicine, or the really great
swirling kinda smashing pumpkins (ie/ drown) songs, then you'd probably
like sian. very atmospheric. roderick kept saying the bass was too loud
and i would have to agree. the set *would* have been amazing were it not
for that. totally nice guys, sean (the guys name, duh) wrote a review of the
whole show for me, even before thrush hermit had hit the stage. go see
them if you can. this was their first tour outside of ontario.

next up, punchbuggy again. wooooooo!!! they played "lucky me, lucky you",
"average joe", "goggles pizano", "if i ever", "average joe", and hmmm,
some more from a.n.c.r. and...they played my favorite song which they've
never recorded, it's called "wa wa" and man, it breaks my heart every
time i hear it. finally, a band that takes requests.

both of these bands mentioned how much they appreciated being able to
play with thrush hermit and treble charger, it was sooo nice to see bands
speaking so positively about stuff like that. i kinda think that's what
it should be about, just supporting each other and having fun on stage.

treble charger got on next and played quite a few songs from their new
EP, which i dont' have yet. i was really impressed with the new songs,
though, especially this one that starts out super groovy-crunchy like (if
that's possible to comprehend). from nc17 they played "red" "10th grade
love" "trinity bellwoods" and um....tonnes more. i think shant has the
set list. they did their stereolab tribute thing in the middle of one of
their songs as usual. :) grieg was even wearing his stereolab tshirt.
bill did his best chris murphy imitation and rosie just rocked full on.
moe drummed.

after treble charger played, i ran into scott tappen from trike (formerly
the quahogs) and i guess they've completely finished up their cd. it
should be out in about another two weeks or so. i just wanted to throw in
a little plug for them, since i won't see them live for months and months
now. power pop with a bit of an edge. jon dacey hates them, 'nuff said. ;)

last up was the homecoming queens thrush hermit. wowzers. i keep
forgetting how young they are. joel is still as friendly as ever, he
wrote a little letter for my friend lisa back home. one time way back
when he danced with us at a sloan gig. he even remembered my $100
speeding ticket from that night. what a thing to be remembered for.

they played all new stuff except for "hated it" "radio blaster" and
"french inhale". I like their new stuff live a lot. the cd i still find a
bit boring compared to their older material. they rocked out sooooo good
and ian's black boxers sure looked cool peeking out from those sexy white
jeans (does he ALWAYS wear white jeans???). as much as i loved their set,
i would have to say they were my least favorite of the four bands, but
that's because i have poor music taste and also i have no indie cred and
i suck. but they still were great. i can't wait to see them again.

after their set i talked to grieg from treble charger for a while, i'm
pretty sure they're gonna do a song for the Les Amis Du Sloan tapes. woo!
he's the biggest sweetie ever, he hugs me more often than my mom does. ;)

anyway, i didn't want to go home at all, but i guess i'll survive since
treble charger will play calgary the day after i get home again and
punchbuggy never stop touring. besides, i think jim and roderick and
james were ready to kill me. hmmm, sounds familiar, huh jason?

I'm sooooooo happy. i would recommend the cd's each of these four bands
put out to anyone.

quick recap for ya:

sian - medicine/swervedriver
punchbuggy - doughboys/all
treble charger - honeymoon suite ;)
thrush hermit - sloan ---- oh YEAH, they played this song that sounded
sooo much like "same old flame" it was ridiculous. silly boys. gotta love
them.

oh, tara dc, grieg said he was sorry he missed you here in hell. :)

keep on rockin' in the free worldly yours,
tara lee of calgary
