mock up, scale down release party

Hey kids,

last night, the release party for the new super friendz album was held on
the Haligonian III, a freakin' Dartmouth to Halifax ferry. woo! this
craft has a capacity of I think 200. good for murderecords, they sold all
200 tickets. which meant they forgot to account for:

a) the band (add another four)
b) the boat's crew (add a few more)

it got kinda freaky while the last few people were boarding, i guess.
lucky for me, i got on just before they realized there were going to be
too many people on board. they finally let an extra few people on and i
guess colin mackenzie chose to stay on shore just so more kids could get
on the boat to watch the show. talk about a nice person, eh? :)

i also heard that an insurance waiver had to be signed due to the extra
passengers, meaning that if anything bad happened, the crew/boat owners etc.
were not responsible. eep!! 200 kids, lotsa beer, and the super friendz
rockin' in the halifax harbour. it could have gotten a bit crazy.

there were lotsa halifax scenesters on board, too. good old mike campbell
was there right in front blocking the view of only about 12 people or so,
so make sure to watch MUCH(not really much east coast rock at all)EAST in
the near future for a taste of this show. ian, joel, and rob from thrush
hermit, al tuck, jenny and eve from jale, lukas pearse from rebecca west,
jay ferguson, and laura borealis, they were all there.

the Haligonian III started moving at around 945 or so. the band got
started right away. i was kinda worried about the sound, it was a very
very small space and plus there was the boat noise and stuff to contend
with. however, it wasn't bad at all, although drew was having some
serious problems with his amp and chris managed to break his bass drum
completely ("we've been trying to break it all tour and it finally does
tonight") half way through the set.

so what did they play, um, i can remember specifically two songs that i
don't think i've ever heard before and i didn't look at the set list so i
dont' know their names.
they played 10lbs, karate man, undertow, down in flames, restricted,
rescue us from boredom, better call, and when they paid me from _mock up,
scale down_

considering how little air and space they had, the set went off pretty
well. matt's singing was beautiful, as always. there were a few points
where his guitar playing got kind of sloppy but hey, they were in a
moving boat. chris' drumming was really good, considering he was kneeling
for most of the set and nearly fell into his snare one time. big show off.;)
drew managed to get through the set ok, despite those problems with his
amp. charles' singing was stellar, especially on "down in flames".
"rescue us from boredom" once again brought tears to my eyes, especially
when matt and charles sang "why we love you" near the end.

we toured the harbour and it all looked so amazing. the lights in both
cities looked really pretty reflected on the water. it was all kinda
magical and special. i think it was a really good idea to have their
release party on a boat and to make sure all ages could attend. after the
set was finished, a tape of the beatles _abbey road_ was played, which
seemed kinda fitting, i suppose.

earlier in the evening, roderick and i made puffed wheat cake and so
after the set, we gave pieces of it away to our friends and to some
strangers and roderick gave some to chris and matt, too. mmmmMMMMMmmmmm. :)
i was amazed chris would even take food from him, considering the huge
fuss chris made at the infamous al tuck/stinkin rich show "cookie
incident". ;)

of course i got incredibly seasick. :(

colin also told us that our ticket stub was good for free entry to
birdland that night. the killjoys, strawberry, orange glass, and kudtzu
(?) were playing. unfortunately by the time we arrived, orange glass was
finished. i did get to talk to ron bates briefly, though, and he seems
really nice. he said he's gonna be pressing another 300 copies of the
orange glass 7''. yay! kudtzu were kinda boring, i thought, but i
probably would have thought that of any band who followed super friendz.
strawberry, well, i was outside for most of their set talking to katrina
about school and church. and the seasickness/fatigue was getting to me,
so i also missed the killjoys. they have an instore in another few hours,
though, so i guess i'll see them then.

not a bad way to spend one's last friday night in halifax.
